Summary:
Pi tells the story of his
childhood in Pondicherry, India, and the origin of his nickname. One day, his
father, a zoo owner, explains that the municipality is no longer supporting the
zoo and he has hence decided to move to Canada, where the animals the family
owns would also be sold. They board on a Japanese cargo ship with the animals
and out of the blue, there is a storm, followed by a shipwrecking. Pi survives
in a lifeboat with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena and a male Bengal tiger
nicknamed Richard Parker. They are adrift in the Pacific Ocean, with aggressive
hyena and Richard Parker getting hungry. Pi needs to find a way to survive. Weeks
later they encounter a floating island of interconnected trees. It is a lush
jungle of edible plants, freshwater pools and a large population of
meerkats,
enabling Pi and Richard Parker to eat and drink freely and regain strength. At
night, the island transforms into a hostile environment. Richard Parker
retreats to the lifeboat while Pi and the meerkats sleep in the trees; the
water pools turn
acidic,
digesting the fish in them. Pi deduces that the island is
carnivorous after
finding a human tooth embedded in a flower.
Pi and Richard Parker leave the island,
eventually reaching the coast of
Mexico.
Pi is saddened that Richard Parker does not acknowledge him before disappearing
into the jungle. He is rescued and brought to a hospital.
